Skateboarders join forces The latest wave of skateboard mania has crashed down on Moose Jaw, with a bang. The skateboard riding street surfers have gained enough notoriety in the city to capture a $5,000 grant from the city in its 1990 budget. Getting a room full of wildly dressed and coiffed boarders to start a skateboard club is the first step toward accessing the money and putting it to use. That will happen as early as June, hopes city recreation program planner Gord Walker. “I get skateboarders stopping in here every week to see what is happening," Walker said. . What is happening is the skateboard club starts Monday at 7 p.m. at the Kinsmen Arena. To access the money an incorporated club must be formed, Walker said. Skateboarders initially got the project rolling with a petition to city council last year, asking for a place to skateboard. Since then, the city circulated a questionnaire asking skateboarders what they want. “We got about 150 responses. I hope we get as good attendance at the meeting too,” Walker said. Walker hopes parents will attend the meeting too. Planning at the meeting will include how the Club will operate and supervise its facility. “We want to give as much help as possible to get this going but it will take some supervision work as well,” he said. He hopes older club members will set up instruction time for younger and less experienced skateboarders. “A lot of kids have skateboards but they don’t know what to do with them. It would be great if some instruction is be organized to show what neat things can be done with skateboards,” Walker said. This summer, it looks like the Kinsmen Arena will be where the club’s equipment will be set up. “It’s got cement floors, and it will be great to have someone use the building during the summer,” Walker said. This summer, there will be no charge for the use of the Centre. Reviewing the project’s background, electing an executive, forming subcommittees and a question session are on the meeting agenda. |
